György Darvas (1948-2023)

Dear colleagues and friends in the field of the applied and interdisciplinary study of symmetry, we regret to inform you that the founder of the International Symmetry Association (ISA; 2003-) and its Honorary CEO, Dr. György Darvas, passed away in the last days of 2023.

His life and scientific activity were devoted to all aspects of symmetry studies, as well as to organizing of the Symmetry Festivals and many other symmetry linked scientific and art events. György Darvas, PhD, physicist and philosopher with an encyclopedic approach to symmetry was a senior scientist from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary.

He has been invited professor and lecturer in many cities worldwide with impact on introducing symmetry studies. His main monographs are: Symmetry. Cultural-Historical and Ontological Aspects of Science-Arts Relations (2007) and Hypersymmetry. Physics of the Isotopic Field-Charge Spin Conservation (2020).

He was one of the first editors of the journal Symmetry: Culture and Science. We have lost Gyuri, as his friends called him, as our greatest friend and most respected scientist. We shall keep in our memory his modest, helpful and friendly manner, providing a perfect example for a scholar of an international signature.
